Education: 76% of children in Brazil do not attend school. Between the ages of 15-19, over 1 million children are illiterate.
Prostitution: between 500,000 and 2 million children succomb to prostitution to help pay for debts, such as housing, food, and and medical bills. A common reason children start prostitution is because a man promises them “work” in another town. The man gives them food and a place to sleep, but the only way to pay for it is through prostitution. Thus a cycle begins that consists of sex, drugs, disease, and ultimately death.
Death Squads: Many people see the Brazilian street children as a threat to their belongings. Drug gangs and corrupt police officers have formed death squads to eliminate street children by torture or even murder. In one year alone, almost 5,000 children are killed by death squads.
